- Children, Childhood and Life Cycle Rituals in Medieval and Early Modern AshkenazTime:: 19:00 - 21:00Location: General Pierre Koenig 37, Jerusalem, IsraelDescription: Many genealogical researchers regret not getting important information from relatives when they still had the opportunity to do so. Now, here’s a chance to “listen in” to many aspects of family life going back in time to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries .
What did the Early Moderns (1500-1750) think about children? Their role in the family, the
larger community?
Additional topics, among many, include the roles of women and girls; life long relationships between grown children and their parents; daily rituals in the home; developments in the Jewish educational system; life cycle events; what is a “wimple”?; what is the unique Ashkenazi custom “hollekreisch”?
Our presenter for this special program is Tali Berner PhD She has a doctorate in Jewish
History from the Hebrew University, specializes in Childhood Studies and Early Modern
Ashkenazi Culture and is on the faculty at Tel Aviv University. Her research concentrates on Jewish communities of Central Europe plus Eastern, Western Europe and Italy.
Please plan to join us for a chance to be “a fly on the wall” and overhear about family
patterns, customs and lifestyles in days very long gone by. This is an opportunity to connect some of the dots with later and/or our own customs and traditions.
