  • Children, Childhood and Life Cycle Rituals in Medieval and Early Modern Ashkenaz

    Happened: 6 years ago

Location: General Pierre Koenig 37, Jerusalem, Israel

    Description:

Many genealogical researchers regret not getting important information from relatives when they still had the opportunity to do so. Now, here’s a chance to “listen in” to many aspects of family life going back in time to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries .

What did the Early Moderns (1500-1750) think about children? Their role in the family, the
    larger community?

Additional topics, among many, include the roles of women and girls; life long relationships between grown children and their parents; daily rituals in the home; developments in the Jewish educational system; life cycle events; what is a “wimple”?; what is the unique Ashkenazi custom “hollekreisch”?

Our presenter for this special program is Tali Berner PhD She has a doctorate in Jewish
History from the Hebrew University, specializes in Childhood Studies and Early Modern
Ashkenazi Culture and is on the faculty at Tel Aviv University. Her research concentrates on Jewish communities of Central Europe plus Eastern, Western Europe and Italy.

Please plan to join us for a chance to be “a fly on the wall” and overhear about family
patterns, customs and lifestyles in days very long gone by. This is an opportunity to connect some of the dots with later and/or our own customs and traditions.

  • BRINGING THE MONTEFIORE CENSUSES TO THE MASSES

    Happened: 5 years ago

Location: Beit Fisher, 5 Klausner Street, Raanana, 20 NIS guest fee

    Description:

The most comprehensive and the only set of documents for the Jewish population in 19th century Eretz Israel covering most of the Jewish settlements is the set of five censuses commissioned by Sir Moshe Montefiore spanning the period of 1839-1875. In the fall of 2007, a group of volunteers lead by Mathilde Tagger, Billie Stein and myself undertook the project of transcribing, transliterating and translating these five censuses into one database, under the auspices of the Montefiore Endowment in London. As of December 2011, the following censuses are online in the database: 1839, 1849, 1855, and 1866 for Eretz Israel and the 1840 census for Alexandria. This lecture is an introduction to the information available in these censuses. The 1839 census collected information on 6,300 inhabitants, and the 1855 census on 9,891 inhabitants. When all the censuses are combined in the database, it is estimated that the database will contain over 45,000 entries for a 36 year period in Eretz Israel..

Venue: Beit Fisher, 5 Klausner Street, Raanana.
Admission: free for IGRA members, NIS 20 for non-members. Info: ingridr@013.net.
