Tuesday October 15th: Israel Genealogy Research Association brings this as part of International Jewish Genealogy Month. Guest speaker: Professional genealogist from New York, Jordan Auslander. Program includes screening of short film ‘Genealogy Goes to the Movies’, followed by Q&A on various genealogy topics, specifically research in the US, Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary.

Program summary: A 28 minute montage of how genealogy is mis/represented in popular film and television; from a 1930 take on the future 1980 census, name changing at Ellis Island to science fiction, where it’s still not “all on the internet.”
Genealogy Goes To The Movies is a look at how the research and researchers are portrayed in film and TV. There’s a lot of it out there and, like most things, Hollywood doesn’t let accuracy get in the way of a good story. This can be both infuriating in perpetuating myths and hilarious.
You’ll see how much family history there is in film and TV. There’s so many ‘Ellis Island name changes’, ‘It’s all on the internet,’ current vital records on library open stacks and, my favorite, shoot-outs in cemeteries.
The film runs about 30 minutes. Jordan will give a brief introduction and take questions afterwards.
