Kenneth Collins’ grandfather, his mother’s father, was born as Litman Ogrodnitsky in Nowogrod in the Lomza area of north-east Poland in 1897. His parents left to join family in Edinburgh soon after his birth. Four siblings, two brothers and two sisters, settled in Scotland while the others left for the USA or remained in Poland. This talk will describe how his grandfather became Louis Ockrim in Scotland and the techniques employed to track down family members now in Scotland, England, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. These involved archival research, oral history, social media, DNA testing, genealogical study and some detective work. The made up name "Ockrim" created by his great-grandfather and his brother within two years of arrival in Scotland made the research process much easier as it is neither a common English name nor is it a Jewish name. There is no-one anywhere in the world with the surname Ockrim who is not a relation. This indeed aided the searches, but other techniques were needed in finding family around the world whose daughters had married into other families and adopted their surnames.
