David Marlow’s German-Jewish parents arrived in Australia in 1939-1940 as refugees. Growing up, David knew little about their lives in Germany or even the names of some grandparents. Through extensive research, he uncovered over three centuries of German-Jewish ancestral history.
David’s investigation spanned multiple continents, utilizing online resources and collaborating with dedicated archivists. The research revealed relatives across Israel, USA, The Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Brazil, and Australia. Notable discoveries included twenty relatives who served in the German Army in WWI, one who fought in the American Civil War, and tragically, over 110 relatives murdered in the Holocaust, including David's paternal grandparents who were deported to Izbica, Poland.
The family's story encompasses 300 years of Jewish life in German-speaking lands, touching on Protected Jews, urbanization, assimilation, antisemitism, Kristallnacht, the Kindertransports, deportations, and the Dunera story. The presentation will share valuable research strategies for those exploring German-Jewish ancestry.

הוריו היהודים-גרמנים של דיוויד מרלו הגיעו לאוסטרליה בשנים 1940-1939 כפליטים. דיוויד ידע מעט מאוד על חייהם בגרמניה. באמצעות מחקר מקיף, הוא חשף למעלה משלוש מאות שנים של היסטוריה יהודית-גרמנית.
מחקרו של דיוויד הקיף יבשות, תוך שימוש במשאבים מקוונים ושיתוף פעולה עם ארכיונאים מומחים. המחקר חשף קרובי משפחה ברחבי ישראל, ארה"ב, הולנד, גרמניה, קנדה, ברזיל ואוסטרליה. בין התגליות הבולטות היו עשרים קרובי משפחה ששירתו בצבא הגרמני במלחמת העולם הראשונה, אחד שלחם במלחמת האזרחים האמריקנית, ולמרבה הטרגדיה, למעלה מ-110 קרובי משפחה שנרצחו בשואה, כולל סבו וסבתו של דיוויד מצד אביו שגורשו לאיזביצה שבפולין.
סיפורה של המשפחה מקיף 300 שנות חיים יהודיים בארצות דוברות גרמנית, נוגע ביהודים מוגנים, עיור, התבוללות, אנטישמיות, ליל הבדולח, הקינדרטרנספורטים, הגירושים וסיפור דונרה. בהרצאתו, דיוויד ישתף אסטרטגיות מחקר חשובות עבור אלה החוקרים על קרוביהם ומורשתם היהודית-גרמנית.

עבודת שחזור תולדות המשפחה עשויה להיתקל בקשיים אובייקטיבים מרובים, ביניהם יתמות מוקדמת והעדר משפחה מורחבת בסביבה הקרובה. החוויה הקשה הזו לא פסחה על אימו של איל ושתי אחיותיה. איל ובני דודותיו ניזונו מסיפורים וזיכרונות, אוסף תמונות צנוע ומסמכים בודדים. העובדה שהמאורעות הללו אירעו בחיפה בתחילת שנות ה- 1920 ובשנות ה- 1930, הקשתה אף היא על בירור המציאות מתוך הזיכרונות הסובייקטיביים והחלקיים. בהרצאתו יתאר איל את שיטות המחקר שלו ויתאר כיצד הצליח במידה רבה לשחזר את תולדות המשפחה, לגלות פרטים נוספים, לאמת ולעמת את הזיכרונות מול העובדות. באמצעות מספר אנקדוטות, איל ידגים כיצד משתלבים הסיפור האישי וההיסטורי, תוך סקירת תולדות משפחתו ממוצאה באוקראינה, דרך הפוגרומים של פטליורה בתקופת מלחמת האזרחים ברוסיה, העלייה לארץ, החיים בחיפה, מות הוריו, והחיים במעון היתומים. ההרצאה תיחתם בתיאור קצר של מסלול החיים השונה מאד של כל אחת מהאחיות, שאף הוא שזור בתולדות היישוב. דיון צדדי יוביל למסלול החיים המיוחד של דודה של אימו, שהפך ליהודי משיחי וייסד את הקהילה של היהודים המשיחיים ביפו בראשה עמד במשך 50 שנה.

Reconstructing the history of the Chudnovsky orphan family - memories vs. reality

Reconstructing family history often encounters objective obstacles, including early orphanhood and the lack of an extended family nearby. Eyal and his cousins grew up with stories, memories, a modest collection of photographs, and a few documents. The events in question took place in Haifa in the early 1920s and 1930s making it hard to distinguish the facts from subjective and partial memories.
Eyal will describe his methodology and explain how he reconstructed his family's history, discovered new details, verified and even confronted memories with historical facts. Eyal will demonstrate how personal and historical narratives intertwine, while reviewing his family's history from its origins in Ukraine, through Petliura's pogroms during the Russian Civil War, immigration and life in Haifa, the death of his parents, and life in the orphanage. The lecture will conclude with a brief description of the different life paths taken by each of the sisters as well as that of his mother's uncle, who became a Messianic Jew and founded the community of Messianic Jews in Jaffa, which he led for 50 years.
