There is a visit to Yad VaShem in Jerusalem organized for Wednesday, June 6, 2012 – meeting in the 1st floor lobby of the ”Administration and Research Building” at 14:45.
Our topic: “The International Tracing Service (ITS)”. One of the highlights of the IAJGS Conference in Washington D.C. was the opportunity to experience the ITS (originally located in Bad Arolsen, Germany) files. Here in Jerusalem we have the good fortune to be able to explore documents describing the fate of millions of civilian victims of Nazi Germany. The collection includes original records from concentration camps, details of forced labor and files on displaced persons. There is an enormous amount of material; registration cards, transport lists, records of deaths, child search archives etc.. There are 50 million references to the fate of over 17.5 million people. This is one of the most important places to search if you are looking for details of what happened to friends and family who were caught up in the Shoah. Also, it may throw light on the fate of family members who, unknown to us, might have been stuck in Europe during WW ll. We are fortunate to have as our lecturer, Zvi Bernhardt, M.A., Deputy Director Of Information Services and The Hall of Names at Yad Vashem. The program, in English, will consist of an introduction to the holdings -their inception, history and description; what they contain as well as how and where they can be accessed by individuals.
