On Sunday, December 7, 2014, Mathilde Tagger will be speaking at the next IGRA meeting in Jerusalem.
Mathilde has been involved in genealogy for many, many years. She is an expert in a variety of fields – especially those relating to Sephardic Genealogy. She has written several books and has made available tens of databases.
Mathilde has spent years digitizing, learning and understanding all of the complexities of the Montefiore Censuses (1839, 1849, 1855, 1866 and 1875 – plus the lone census of the Jews of Alexandria, Egypt). These Censuses are owned by the Montefiore Endowment and they have preserved, conserved and scanned them. At the onset, the IGS was commissioned to transcribe and translate these records of the Jewish population of the Holyland from 1839-1875. Mathilde Tagger, Rose Feldman and Billie Stein headed the project and worked with a team of 31 volunteers. The censuses are now searchable in both English and Hebrew and are available only on the Montefiore Endowment website.
The census charts were compiled by the community or Kollel heads, and are divided accordingly. The data requested (but not always provided) included name, age and place of birth of the head of household, his financial status and occupation, his wife’s name, names and ages of his children and various comments. It is possible now for researchers to evaluate the information and draw conclusions about various aspects of life during that period.
Mathilde will speak on “The Montefiore Census Project – from Computerization to Multi-disciplinary Research”. The lecture will be in Hebrew with the presentation slides in English. A special presentation will be made to the Montefiore “team”. We are proud that Mathilde, Rosie and Billie are vital members of IGRA and of the amazing contribution they have made.
