Womenโ€™s Surnames โ€“ Challenges and Issues in Genealogical Research

Presented in Hebrew by Dr. Lea Haber-Gedalia

For genealogical researchers, uncovering a personโ€™s name is the first milestone inย tracing ancestry. With women, however, we often know them only through familial labels โ€” โ€œmother of,โ€ โ€œdaughter of,โ€ โ€œwife of,โ€ "The Rabbi's Son-in-Law", and similar references โ€” making the discovery of maiden names especially difficult.ย

This lecture will explore both theoretical and practical approaches to uncovering womenโ€™s birth names.

Dr. Lea Haber-Gedalia is a professional genealogist with 20 years of experienceย researching families and communities for family trees, citizenship applications, and heir tracing. She has held roles in the Israeli Genealogical Society (Eilam), taught widely, documented cemeteries worldwide, and created community websites for JewishGenโ€™s KehilaLinks project.

ย The lecture will be in Hebrew. Gathering and light refreshments from 7:00 PM The lecture will begin at 7:30. Advance registration required. No charge for IGRA members. Entrance fee for guests is NISย 20. Forย a seat at the venue send an e-mail to [email protected]ย The lecture will NOT be broadcast on Zoom.

Webinar: Using Russian and Ukrainian Language Internet Resources for Jewish Genealogy in English by Samuel Chaniel Lerner

    When: January 12, 2026 7:00 - 8:00 pm

    Register atย https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/uRBA-Bm-RSi47RZwN7RGeA

This session aims to help family history researchers with little to no proficiency in Russian and/or Ukrainian, as well as family history researchers with greater proficiency in those languages, navigate websites, forums, and databases that are in Russian and/or Ukrainian. The contents of these websites, forms, and databases could help a researcher find more information about a town of interest, find if records exist for that town, find family trees, find images of matzevot, find records regarding victims of political repression in the USSR and find WWI and WWII records
Sammy's passion for genealogy has led him to participate in the JewishGen Future Scholars Fellowship in 2023, index handwritten Russian language material that appeared on JewishGen's website, speak at IAJGS conferences, and volunteer with Lโ€™Dor Vโ€™Dorโ€™s Foundation in the mission to create an online catalog of Jewish historical records. He is a graduate of Washington & Jefferson College with a major in Neuroscience and a minor in Russian Studies

Presentedโ€ญ โ€ฌin English by Daniella Alyagon

I created my first family-roots project back in elementary school, and over the years, my family tree grew far beyond recognition. But a few years ago, I deleted everything and started againโ€”this time with a solid, methodical approach.
In this talk, Iโ€™ll discuss what led me to rebuild my research from scratch and the techniques I use today. You will walk away with practical workflows you can apply to your own genealogical research.

Daniella Alyagon is a genealogist and actuary with over 30 years of experience in family history research. Her geographical areas of expertise include Austria, Galicia, Bukowina, Poland, and Israel. Passionate about archival research, she mentor other researchers and share strategies for uncovering family stories through lectures, guidance, and tackling complex research challenges.

After World War II began in September 1939, the Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland. This talk uses NKVD files from 1939โ€“1941 to explore Jewish experiences in western Ukraine, including arrests of Jews from Poland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary, and Romania. Searchable on Gesher Galicia, the annotated records reveal links between many NKVD victims and Mandatory Palestine and showcase confiscated items that may connect Israeli descendants with their family history
Dr. Zalewski is a former professor of medicine at Jefferson University, Philadelphia, and the author of two books on Austrian Galicia: โ€œGalician Trailsโ€ and โ€œGalician Portraits.โ€ In prior years, he led archival research into Jewish physicians and Jewish legal rights in Galicia. Currently, as historical research advisor to Gesher Galicia, he coordinates a multiyear project on the Jewish experience in Soviet-occupied former eastern Galicia (now western Ukraine). Dr. Zalewski regularly speaks at cultural institutions in the US and abroad
