IGRA and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) participate in International Jewish Genealogy Month during the Hebrew month of Heshvan which corresponds this year to 25 October to 22 November 2014.
In Israel there are three central activities to put in your calendar:
12 November at the National Library of Israel, Jerusalem: 13:30-18:30 – The topic of this half-day seminar is “Roots at the Front, Resources for Historical Research Concerning WWI”. The first part of the Seminar will have parallel sessions in English and Hebrew. The second part will be in Hebrew. Please follow the NLI link for further details and registration.
16 November at the Holon cemetery: 8:30-18:30 – IGRA joins MyHeritage for a chance at history – documenting Israel’s largest cemetery in one day. Participants with a smart phone will begin the day at the MyHeritage offices in Yehud. Following breakfast and an introduction all will be transported by bus to the Holon cemetery. We’ll work with a lunch break until the late afternoon when transportation will be provided back to the MyHeritage offices. Documenting cemeteries all over the world is an important effort to allow access to the tombstones and the important information they contain. Click here to register!
26 November at Beit Hatfutsot, Tel Aviv: 16:30-20:00 – IGRA’s Heshvan Event. Each Heshvan IGRA has chosen to honor its many volunteers. We want to acknowledge the essential work of our volunteers to make records available. Certificates will be awarded and two volunteers will receive the Mathilde Tagger Award of Recognition for Volunteering with the IGRA Databases. In addition, this year there are three special awards that will be presented. Following the awards and refreshments we will be showing the movie “I am Bialik” in the presence of director Aviv Talmor. A short discussion will then take place with Aviv. Please plan to be with us! (IGRA members 25 NIS, guests 50 NIS)
Let us make the most of the month of Heshvan to work on the puzzle of our own family trees and to each find a way to be part of the BillionGraves project documenting cemeteries and transcribing tombstones.
