ResearchingFamily Roots – A Thousand Years of History of a family

In2013, the last suitcase of Helene (née Einstein) was discovered by chance inthe attic of an apartment in Germany. Helene, who was fleeing persecution, wasdeported to Auschwitz and murdered there. The suitcase contained genealogicaltreasures that led to in-depth research and to unique historical discoveries. Thelong chain of generations was uncovered primarily thanks to letters ofprotection granted to the family’s ancestors, who served as "court Jews" andbankers in the Tyrol region and in northern Italy. The documentation reaches asfar back as a rabbinical lineage to Rabbi Isaac ben Eliezer ha-Levi, theteacher of Rashi, who lived about a thousand years ago in the Rhine region ofGermany.

Yair Kam, Helene’s great-grandson, who lives in Tel Aviv and has pursuedgenealogy as a hobby since the family discovery described above came to light.

Gathering and light refreshments from 7:00 PM The lecture will begin at 7:30. Advance registration required. No charge for IGRA members. Entrance fee for guests is NIS 20. For a seat at the venue send an e-mail to [email protected] The lecture will NOT be broadcast on Zoom.

Do you have Hungarian descent — or roots from regions like Serbia, Romania, or even Ukraine that were once part of historic Hungary? If so, you may be eligible to become a Hungarian citizen and obtain an EU passport. For those interested, this session is a concise, experience-based walkthrough of the process, focused on the questions and parts people wonder about and struggle with most. You’ll see how this pathway can reshape your life and get a sense of what it’s like to live as an EU citizen, and have your real concerns answered. You’ll leave with clarity, direction, and the confidence to move forward if you have Hungarian ancestry and want to reclaim EU citizenship.

Ethan & Lídia built Learn Hungarian Anywhere on the belief that freedom is earned through knowledge, cultural connection, and self-reliance. Their program transforms Hungarian ancestry into EU citizenship — and the ability to build a new life, from Berlin to Budapest to the beaches of Croatia.

We shall look at the 500 year history of Spanish Jews in the Romanian lands (the Principalities of Wallachia, Moldova (which at times included Bessarabia) and Transylvania until 1859 and respectively Romania afterwards) through the lens of their economic, financial, social, educational, and cultural contributions to the development of their home- (or in some instances adoptive) country. As a particular case study, starting from the genealogical trees of the two most important Sephardic families of 19th century Bucharest, we shall see how instrumental personal connections, which often doubled business links, proved to be in the success of their patriotic efforts

Today there are an estimated 7.6 million Jewish Americans living in the country, the majority of whom descend from diaspora Jewish populations from Central and Eastern Europe. Learning how to trace your Jewish ancestry is not without its challenges: changing surnames, locating your ancestor's home village or shtetl, and access to overseas records are just the tip of the iceberg. This webinar will discuss the historical context of your ancestor's arrival in the United States, review American records that can be helpful in your research, and provide basic strategies for uncovering your ancestor's exact origins in the old country.

Melanie McComb is a Senior Genealogist at American Ancestors. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Oswego. She is an international lecturer who teaches on various topics including colonial through twentieth-century American military research, genetic genealogy, Atlantic Canadian, African American, Jewish, and Irish genealogy. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society. She has had articles published in American Ancestors Magazine and Fifty Plus Advocate. She is a blogger, known as The Shamrock Genealogist.
